Sorcerer
Keeper of the Vesper Stacks
Every spell is a footnote he is eager to cite.

Story
The Vesper Stacks are a library so tall that it has weather. The Sorcerer spent decades in its upper galleries, reading until he forgot what his own face looked like. Under the hat there is only shadow and two small lamps, and he insists this is an improvement.
He is the only person in the valley who read the warnings about the Sleepless Gate. All forty volumes. Then he came anyway, because the warnings were written by people who had never seen the Gate in person. The cursed things of the Deep, the skeletons, shadows and imps, fascinate him. He considers them unfinished research, and he intends to finish it.
Fire sits in his open palm like a patient cat. The crescent-moon staff glows whenever someone nearby is about to say something incorrect, which makes it very busy in the Deep.
