Story

The Greenwatch is a forest that grew over a city, and the rangers who keep it can read both the leaves and the old street signs. Every morning the Ranger counts the arches still standing. Some mornings the count is one fewer, and he does not talk about those mornings.

He was a watcher until the Gate began to stir, and a watcher who sees a gate is required by tradition to do something about it. He has spent years looking for a loophole. Meanwhile he has learned that the humanoid foes of the Deep, the bandits, orcs and goblins who walk upright and believe they are being quiet, are the easiest to read from a very long way off.

His bow is old gold on older yew. The red scarf came from the only person who ever beat him at archery, a story he tells exactly once per visitor. The wind tells him where to stand. The arrow, he says, just tells everyone else.
